Know Your Carling Cup Opponent: Shrewsbury Town F.C.

As an American, I understand that not everyone reading may be up on their knowledge of lower division English football clubs. I fully admit that my own knowledge of teams outside the Premier League is incomplete at best, so to remedy this deficiency I present to you the first edition of Know Your Carling Cup Opponent: Shrewsbury Town F.C.

Shrewsbury, Shropshire is located in the West Midlands region of England. Shrewsbury Town F.C. was founded in 1886, and has risen as high as the second division of English football. Shrewsbury currently plays in League Two, the fourth division of English football. Shrewsbury Town was in it’s heyday in the 1980s, when they competed in the old Second Division and defeated current Premier League sides such as Chelsea, Newcastle United, Fulham, and Blackburn Rovers. Shrewsbury’s traditional rivals are Walsall and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Shrewsbury Town’s colors are blue and amber, and they play their home games at Greenhous Meadow (capacity: 9,875). The Blues are managed by Graham Turner, who is doing his second stint as Shrewsbury manager, and finished 4th in League Two last season. Mark Wright led Shrewsbury with 14 league goals in 2010/11, and the Blues have been paced in scoring by Marvin Morgan’s 4 league goals thus far in the 2011/12 campaign.
